Some of the lessons we gleaned from diversity training can be useful in helping search committee members address bias:
Avoid snap judgments/ assumptions through first impression; use evidence based decision making; refrain from “crystal ball gazing” – making predictions on behalf of a candidate, an outcome, desire, preference, ability, interest, or otherwise; avoid “cloning”, replicating oneself by hiring someone with similar attributes or background; refrain from reading a candidate’s social media pages prior/during the search process.
